Land Acknowledgement

Kjipuktuk, known as Halifax, is located in Mi'kma'ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq People. The water and land we gather and compete on have been cared for since time immemorial by the Mi’kmaq and we are grateful for their continued stewardship.

For generations, the Shubenacadie waterway, including Lake Panuk (Banook) has been a path of travel and a place of gathering. We are excited to welcome the world in 2026 to honour the legacy of  the Peace and Friendship Treaty that covers this territory. 

Through competition, celebration and friendship we honour the spirit of the Treaty and the mutual respect it takes to be Treaty people.

Reconnaissance du territoire  

Halifax se trouve à Mi’kma’ki, le territoire ancestral et non cédé du peuple Mi’kmaq, qui prend soin de ses terres et de ses eaux depuis des millénaires. 

Depuis des générations, la voie navigable de Shubenacadie, y compris le lac Banook, est un lieu de passage et de rassemblement pour les Mi’kmaq. Alors que nous nous préparons à accueillir le monde en 2026, nous rendons hommage à cette histoire et aux relations durables qui nous unissent en tant que peuples signataires de traités.
